Meaning of Khechari Mudra

The word Khechari (खेचरी) comes from two Sanskrit words:

·      Kha () - meaning "sky" or "space"

·      Chari (चरी) - meaning "to move"

Thus, Khechari Mudra means "the mudra that allows one to move in the inner space of consciousness."

How to Practice Khechari Mudra

Khechari Mudra involves rolling the tongue upwards and backwards so that it touches the soft palate (roof of the mouth). With advanced practice, the tongue can even enter the nasal cavity, stimulating the brain's higher centers.

Steps to Perform Khechari Mudra:

1.     Sit in a comfortable meditative posture like Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or Sukhasana (Easy Pose).

2.     Close your eyes and take deep breaths to relax.

3.     Roll your tongue upwards so that it touches the soft palate.

4.     Hold the position as long as comfortable while focusing on deep breathing and meditation.

5.     With practice, try to extend the tongue further upwards.

6.     You can also combine this mudra with Pranayama or Meditation for deeper effects.

Sanskrit Shloka on Khechari Mudra

This practice is described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika:

चित्त्वा गोमुन्नत्वा पूरणेन मुद्रक्रियम् |
मुद्रानामुपास्यन्ते यो गतिमृत्युपो यतिम् ||

(Hatha Yoga Pradipika 3.32)
"When the tongue is inserted into the nasal cavity, it allows the yogi to experience great bliss and the nectar of immortality."
